Catnip for Humans

My first thought of the morning came as I was being meowed at in the kitchen by our family cat, Nickey. Bear with me as I go through the thought process...

Usually vocal when only needing fed or wanting affection, I couldn't figure out what his deal was! He had fresh, cold water, plenty of Meow Mix... So I picked him up, scratched his belly, placed him back on the floor, then proceeded to fix breakfast for me and the kids.

"Meowwwww....Meowwwwwwwww."
"What do you want, Nickey?" (Yes, I talk to a cat.)
"Meowwww."
"You have food and water...see?" (like he paid attention to me pointing...)
"Meowww."
"It's too early for catnip..." (I've always thought: catnip to a cat = candy to a human.)
"Meowww."

So I let him do his "give me five" trick (raises his right paw to my outstretched right hand) for some catnip. I sprinkle some on the kitchen floor and he immediately plops and romps and then gallops off happy and content.

If only there were catnip for humans...

I'm not talking about a drug--and surely not an illegal one! Human catnip should be a thing or a place that would be a sure fire way to instigate true happiness and contentment. Maybe a word or a photo...or perhaps a fond memory would do the trick. After a sip of coffee, I realized that perhaps there IS catnip for humans.

Realization: Everyone's 'catnip' is different and unique as they are.

I sure could use some catnip right about now...How about you? What would your catnip be?

My catnip de jour would be a job...No, scratch that. A career. A career that would place me perfectly in society, matching my talents, experience and goals with a company out there that would appreciate me as much as I appreciate them. (Isn't that what everybody desires?)
In today's economy, we all could use that kind of catnip...

So as I print yet another resume and email my soul to strangers, I'll continue to 'meow' loudly, yet respectfully, to my Owner and Creator and hope for some catnip to be sprinkled at my feet today.

  1. Since we're keeping it legal, coffee is my catnip.
It makes me feel warm on cold days, tells my mind to get going in the morning and satisfies after a good meal. And there's nothing like a fresh pot brewing and gurgling as I grab the Sunday morning paper in my robe. It just me feel good.
